A replica of a medallion from the 12th - 13th century, on which is St. George killing a dragon. The original is from Novgorod (Kievan Rus) However, similar ones were found in Lithuania and Poland (Dublowo)

Saint George was originally a Roman soldier who was born in Turkey. He criticized the decision of Emperor Diocletian, who issued an order to prosecute Christians. He was tortured and executed for confessing to being a Christian himself.

The legend of St. George and the Dragon was brought by the Crusaders in the 11th century. It originally came from Cappadocia in Turkey.

This saint was very popular during the Middle Ages. As a dragon slayer, he was a protector against demons and the devil.
