The early medieval annunciations of the saints are different from today's annunciations of Jesus on the cross. The figure is symmetrical and lacks spikes, the hands are tied around the wrists. Here too the artist has nicely captured the hood and the ruffled trousers; the bands across the wrists may be ropes or bracelets or decorations on the sleeves of the tunic. The facial features and the symmetrical hints of brooches or breasts point to a depiction of a woman, generally said to be a representation of the Virgin Mary.
