Lunice 🌙 as an amulet for young girls and a symbol of the female cycle and fertility, a mysterious sign of protection from evil forces.
The symbolism of lunettes is still debated. Were they perhaps worn by young girls to protect their health during pregnancy? Or were they the emblem of priestesses dedicated to the cult of the moon, lover of the sun? Were they the mark of the diviners who served as healers and midwives in ancient and medieval times?
Most often found in the graves of young girls and children. Was it a grave offering from the mother to the child as a symbol of rebirth, or was it to protect them in sickness? Snake-like decorations might suggest this. These were associated in the past with cyclical rebirth, shedding of skin and renewal, fertility and immortality.
I guess we'll never know. But what is certain is that this symbolism still has a strong mystique today.
