John of Wallingford wrote of the Vikings in his Chronicle of 1220 that they attracted attention for their, for the time, unprecedented attitude to purity. They combed their hair daily, bathed weekly, groomed their beards, even had nail polishers, ear spoons, tweezers and the like. The Arab Ibn Fadlan, on the other hand, saw it differently, but what is certain is that the Norse standards of hygiene were far above the standards of his time.
