Carnelian, a variety of quartz with a high iron oxide content, is known as a mineral commonly found as a decorative stone in historical jewellery. Including beads made from this beautiful mineral. But what's the big attraction? Carnelian doesn't stick to hot wax and clay, which is why it has been used to make seals and stamps throughout history.
Its deposits are quite common in Europe. In the Czech Republic Podkrkonoší, Iceland (yes, the Vikings), it is widely mined in Egypt and Turkey, for example.
The colour ranges from red to pale orange, milky, with distinctive stripes and rings or with varying transparency.
