In the 18th century, more than 3,000 small golden plaques with figural motifs were found in the dunes of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. They date back to the pre-Viking period 550 - 800 A.D. - Vendel period, Merovingian period, Late Iron Age.
Very often a man and a woman are depicted, perhaps with branch symbols, which could represent the god Frey as the protector of sacred marriage. Their depiction can thus be called a medallion of marriage and fertility.
Many medallions are depicted with an animal head and a finger at the mouth or with a staff, which could depict oracles and witches, called Völva.
Our medallion is from the island of Bornholm from a place called Sorte Muld, where there are more than 100 lover's depictions. It is lightweight, the loop is made according to the common loops found on many medallions with two rivets.
Our tip? Add a few beads as a pendant or hang it between your strings of beads, it looks great!
