Description

Our replica is from Venice, Italy. We find similar ale from the late stage of the Migration of Peoples period throughout central Europe. One of the most famous finds of this type in our country is certainly the set of clasps in Světec near Bílina (Teplice district).

The massive buckle with an animal motif is unmistakable for its arches decorated with seven buttons. The technique of notching is typical of metalwork in this period. The craftsmanship and opulence of this jewel suggest that it is the equipment of the local elite.

Hear, hear! The first Slavs and our favourite Frankish merchant, Sámo, are coming! The 4th-6th centuries AD are generally referred to as the Migration of Peoples - a little-studied period between the waning era of the Roman Empire and the now much-reconstructed Early Middle Ages, the era of the Vikings, Great Moravia, the Avars and the Frankish Empire.

We date this interesting period from 375 - that is, from the defeat of the Ostrogothic Union on the Lower Volga by the Hun nomads.

The Roman Empire finally ceased to exist in 476, and new settlements and empires were founded on its territory by the so-called barbarians.

In the first half of the 5th century, the Ostrogothic Empire (Amalans) and the Frankish Empire (Merovingians) are already in the west. In central Europe, the Burgundian, Thuringian and Alamannic empires play an important role from the middle of the 5th century onwards, and the Danube is dominated by the Gepids and Langobards.
