Description

The hand-carved and machined deer antler needle is a functional replica. Archaeologically documented style of knitting predating contemporary knitting and crochet. Needles made of antler, bone and wood have been found.

This style of knitting has been found in Egypt, the Balkans and Peru, but we are most familiar with it from central Europe, the islands and Scandinavia. Especially in the Nordic countries and among reenactors, i.e. people reconstructing a certain time period, it has become one of the most commonly replicated crafts and historical textile styles.  Are you one of them? You might also be interested in something we wrote HERE about the use of this style for reconstructing knitting from the early Middle Ages !

Hats, hats under helmets, socks, scarves, gloves and whole garments - it's up to you what you make with this knitting style with one needle. And the kinds of stitches! Learn Mammen, York, Vasa or 9 other knitting patterns.

I believe the process of making using only hand tools hasn't changed much in the making of these needles of mine. I also accept custom orders, such as with your symbol, rune, etc.

Our tip for the reenactory: we found a whole new use for such a needle for braiding hairstyles, especially those with intricately braided braids and stretched jewels and ribbons!

I hold the certificate Zápraží - Original Product - which supports craftsmen in the region southeast of Prague. It means that everything was made by hand here, in the heart of Bohemia.

I also received the Master of Crafts of the Central Bohemia Region award - it honours craftsmen for their long-lasting endurance in a craft that is revived and popularised at home and in the world.
