This replica of a manicure is made on the basis of the find from Birka, grave 507. The difference is that the original had a "spoon" at the end and not a tip for cleaning nails.
John of Wallingford wrote about the Vikings in his 1220 chronicle that they attracted attention with their unprecedented attitude toward cleanliness at the time. They combed every day, bathed every week, their beards were groomed, they even had nail polishers, ear spoons, tweezers and the like. Arab Ibn Fadlan, on the other hand, saw it differently, but it is certain that Northerner hygiene standards were well above the level of their time, and these needs should be in the equipment of every early medieval reenactor.
It is a perfect demonstration that people of that time took care of themselves and were not the dirty barbarians that many TV shows and films show us....
